The Awakening, a new event for youth, debuts Saturday.

Upcoming Catholic events in our region:

Aug. 5, Catholic Faith Night at Florence Freedom baseball (Florence, KY), 7:05 pm.  Each person who reserves tickets will receive a Bishop Foys bobblehead for the Independent League game against the Lake Eerie Crushers, which will be followed by fireworks. Bishop Foys will make a special appearance. Tickets $10-$13; to reserve call (859) 594-4487.

Aug. 6, Blue Jay 5K and Kids Fun Run at St. Joseph Church (Cold Spring, KY). Chip-timed 5K for teens and adults; kids run free. Part of the two-day St. Jospeh Parish Festival. For information, click here.

Aug. 6, Building Bridges Blazin’ Hot 5K at the University of Dayton, 10:30 am (Kids Half-Mile Fun Run: 10 am). Co-sponsored by the UD Law School Student Bar Association. On-site registration begins at 9 am; light breakfast follows race. For information or to register click here.

Aug. 6-7, DCCH Flea Market Summer Sale (Covington). Antiques, tools, clothes, toys, furniture, home decor, more. 8 am – 2 pm Saturday; 11 am – 2 pm Sunday. Benefits teh Diocesan Catholic Children’s Home. For information see dcchcenter.org.

Aug. 6, Holy Smokes! Barbeque Competition at Our Lady of Victory Church (Western Hills/Cincinnati), noon – 11 pm. KCBS-sanctioned competition with 23 entries from around the country and Canada. Judge the People’s Choice competition at 2 pm ($5). Music, barbeque tasting, games, booths, local craft beer.

Aug. 6, Renovation Adoration at Our Lady of Victory Church (Western Hills/Cincinnati), 4:30 – 8 pm. Follows the 4:30 vigil Mass, the first Mass offered after the building’s renovation. All welcome.

August 6, “The Awakening” Youth Rally at the Transfiguration Center for Spiritual Renewal (West Milton/Ludlow Falls, OH). Keynote speaker, dinner, outdoor mass, Exposition and Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, a concert by Nashville group His Own, and fellowship — an exciting, fun-filled, deeply Catholic experience for teens. August 7, Holy Hour for Vocations to the Priesthood at The Athenaeum of Ohio/Mount St. Mary’s Seminary of the West (Mt. Washington/CIncinnati), 5 pm. Aug. 8 – Nov. 13, “Hans Frederich Grohs: Artist and Mystic” at the University of Dayton (OH) Roesch Library. Work by a leading representative of the second generation of German Expressionism, known for his Christian-themed woodcuts and watercolors. Aug. 6-14, “Justice: The First and Necessary Step to Mercy” Eagle Eye Greater Ohio Young Adult Summer Institute at Red River Gorge (KY) and Our Lady of the Holy Spirit Center (Norwood, OH). Join the Brothers and Sisters of St. John and other Catholic young adults in an 8-day quest for the truth. Daily Mass, Adoration and prayer, theological and philosophical classes, camping and hiking at Red River Gorge, recreation, friendship, more. First two days at the Gorge. Aug. 7, 2nd Annual La Salle Walk and Family Day at La Salle High School Lancer Stadium (Mt. Airy/Cincinnati), noon – 3 pm. Benefits the Aubrey Rose Foundation for families caring for children with life threatening illnesses. Sponsored by the La Salle Alumni Assn. Basket raffle, children’s activities, walk through surrounding neighborhood. National anthem, prayer, alma mater and fight song: 1 pm. Walk starts: 1:15 pm. Aug. 7, Family Rosary Walk and Dinner at Transfiguration Center (Ludlow Falls, OH), 4-7 pm. Invite the whole family and come away to a “beautiful place” for a unique rosary experience beginning at at the statue of Mary (goldfish pond), followed by a procession through the gardens and woods of the beautiful Lange Estate. Artistic banners help reflect on the mysteries. A pot-luck dinner follows at the shelter house. Center provides meats, drinks; bring an entrée for 6. Rain location: inside the Center. Aug. 8, Mass for St. Dominic and Vesting of Dominican Novices at St. Gertrude Church and Priory (Madeira, OH), 11:30 am. This year’s Dominican novices are vested in a private ceremony at the priory; all welcome for the Mass that follows. Aug. 11, Covington Catholic High School Alumni Cross County 5K Race at Devou Park (Covington), 7 pm. All alumi and friends of the CCH Cross Country program are welcome at this free 5K that begins and ends near the Drees Pavilion. For information email Coach Tom Arnold at tarnold@covecath.org.

August 11, CHOSEN: Monthly Holy Hour for Vocations at the Our Lady of the Holy Spirit Center (Norwood, OH), 8 pm. Music and prayer for those discerning a vocation or praying for vocations. Sponsored by the Archdiocesan Vocation Office and Children of Mary.

Aug. 13: Viva la Vida, Lucas Pfander Memorial Alumni Race at Chaminade Julienne Catholic High School (Dayton). Course: CJ campus, 2-mile walk and one-mile run. Aug. 13, 2nd Annual Patrick Wolterman Alumni Flag Football Game at Roger Bacon High School stadium (St. Bernard, OH), 7 pm.  Re-named in honor of fallen 2005 Roger Bacon grad Patrick Wolterman (class of 05), who gave his life in the line of duty as a fireman in Hamilton on December 28, 2015. Traveling 9/11 memorial by 911 Steel (a partnership between the Cincinnati Fire Museum and the Goodtimers Foundation) will be on site. All welcome. No charge; burgers, hot dogs, and drinks $1.

Aug. 14, Padre Pio Presentation at Mother of God Church (Covington), 6 pm. A Franciscan friar from the Rotondo, Italy, friary where St. Pio lived will be present. Film and presentation about St. Pio, light snacks, question and answer period, rosary; individual blessings with first class relics of St. Pio before and after 8:30 pm candlelight Mass.
