Photos: Prayer for a Classmate
Students and staff at Seton and Elder High schools (Price Hill/Cincinnati) assembled on the Seton lawn to pray and hold up their hands in the shape of a heart when the funeral procession for Mother of Mercy High School (Westwood/Cincinnati) freshman Anna Kroger passed by on Friday, on its way to Old St. Joseph Cemetery.
Catholic schools around the city adopted Anna as an honorary classmate after her sudden death from an undisclosed medical emergency earlier this month, offering Mercy and the Kroger family prayers and support in person and on social media.
La Salle High School (Mt. Airy/Cincinnati), where Kroger’s brother Nolan is a student and she played in the band, held a memorial service. Students at McAuley High School (College Hill/Cincinnati), a second area school sponsored by the Sisters of Mercy, wore blue to honor her. Teams played in her honor, using the hashtags #playforanna and #prayforanna.
Mercy posted many of the photos and messages on the school’s Facebook page. “Thank you to Seton for a huge show of support this week — Tweets, prayers, phone calls, flowers, and banner signed by the whole school, and now this,” a school spokesperson said on the Mercy Facebook page, after the student body sent a photo of themselves and the staff dressed in Mercy blue and spelling out the message, S (heart) M. “We feel the love.”
The daughter of Brent and Elaine Kroger, Anna was buried from St. Ignatius of Loyola Church (White Oak, OH), where the family are parishioners.
“There are no words to express how heavy our hearts are for her loved ones,” A Seton spokesperson wrote in a Facebook post. “As you read this post, we hope that it serves as a reminder to please continue to#PrayForAnna, the Kroger family and the Mercy community.”
