Ordinations Saturday in Cincinnati, Covington

Ordinations Saturday in Cincinnati, Covington

Three men ordained at last year’s ordination Mass at St. Peter in Chains Cathedral (Cincinnati) prostrate themselves to show they are unworthy of priesthood and depend entirely on God.

Five men will be ordained priests in Covington, and seven in Cincinnati, on Saturday morning in the city’s cathedrals.

Covington Bishop Roger Foys will ordain five men to the holy priesthood established by Christ and conferred in an unbroken line from the apostles at 10 am in St. Mary’s Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption.

At 11 am, Archbishop Schnurr will ordain seven men to the priesthood at the Cathedral of St. Peter in Chains.

The ancient ceremony includes the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass and distinctive rituals that include the candidates prostrating themselves to demonstrate their unworthiness; the laying on of hands, in which the bishop confers priesthood; and the vow of obedience, in which each man kneels before the bishop and offers him his hands as he promises to go where he is sent.

Most of the priests in each diocese attend and concelebrate and the cathedral choirs will sing, making ordination one of the most solemn, “high” celebrations of the Church. But the ceremony also has a joyous, family feel reminiscent of a wedding. Thhe ordinands’ family and friends are present, their mothers are often specially honored, and in a symbolic way the men “marry” the Church and become fathers of all her people.

Men to be ordained for the Diocese of Covington:

  • Deacon Eric Andriot
  • Deacon Jason Bertke
  • Deacon David Ludwig
  • Deacon Thomas Picchioni
  • Deacon James Schaeper

Men to be ordained for the Archdiocese of Cincinnati:

  • Deacon Tim Fahey
  • Deacon Matt Feist
  • Deacon Chris Geiger
  • Deacon Alex McCullough
  • Deacon Eric Rousch
  • Deacon Jason Williams
  • Deacon Sean Wilson

All are invited to these celebrations and to ask one or more of the new priests for a first blessing at the receptions that follow. Covington’s reception will be at the Northern Kentucky Convention Center in Covington, and Cincinnati’s reception will be in the cathedral undercroft.

Ordination season for our region won’t end Saturday: Six men will be ordained priests for the Archdiocese of Indianapolis at its cathedral on June 25th. Two men who just completed  their studies at Mount St. Mary’s Seminary of the West (Mt. Washington/Cincinnati) for priesthood elsewhere will also be ordained next month: Deacon Br. Thomas Reagan, CPM, will be ordained for the Fathers of Mercy on June 4th at the Chapel of Divine Mercy in Auburn, KY, and  Deacon Jeffery Smith will be ordained for the Diocese of Toledo at St. Columba Cathedral on June 25th.

According to the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB), more almost 550 men will be ordained priests this year. In 2015 that number was almost 600, and in 2014 it was almost 500.
