NewCath, Moeller Clinch Championships Saturday

The State Champion Newport Central Catholic Thoroughbreds.

The Newport Central Catholic Thoroughbreds and the Moeller Crusaders won state championships in their divisions this weekend, making both sides of the Ohio River victorious in this year’s high school football contests.

NewCath won the KHSAA Class 2A Championships Saturday afternoon, with a 30-26 victory over Caldwell county at Houchens-Smith Stadium at Bowling Green.

It’s the Kentucky high school’s second state title in three years, and its fifth overall.

Moeller’s 20-12 victory caps its celebration of the Montgomery (OH) school football program’s 50th year. Moeller beat the previously undefeated Whitmer Panthers at Fawcett Stadium in Canton Saturday night. The Panthers were making their first-ever appearance at a state championship game; Moeller was making its first appearance since 1997 and its first win since 1985.

  1. Coldwater High School Cavaliers in the northern area of the Archdiocese took home the OHSAA Division V State Championship, too. Kudos to all!
