May Crowning at Sacred Heart Sunday
Sacred Heart Church in Camp Washington/Cincinnati invites all, especially those whose parishes do not celebrate the devotion, to May Crowning Sunday.
The event, which is for children as well as any adults who would like to join them, will be part of the combined English/Latin Mass parish’s monthly Holy Hour.
Adoration begins after the 9 am English Mass, and usually extends until the 11:30 Extraordinary Form (“old Latin”) Mass at 11:30.
However, this month Adoration will end early, so the May Crowning can precede the Latin Mass. All are invited to attend either Mass, as well as Adoration. The complete schedule follows:
- 9 am: English Mass (Ordinary Form)
- Approx. 10 am: Adoration begins
- Approx. 10:15 am: Rosary
- Approx. 10:45 am: Benediction
- 11 am: May Crowning
- 11:30 am: Latin Mass (Extraordinary Form)
- Light refreshments follow.
All who wish to participate in the procession through the church and the May Crowning are invited to bring a flower from home and assemble in the vestibule at 11:00 (extra flowers will be available). First Communicants from other parishes are invited to wear their First Communion outfits. The Sacred Heart choirs will sing Marian hymns to begin the brief ceremony. One person will be chosen to crown Mary with a wreath of flowers; all other participants will place their flowers in vases at the base of a statue of Mary.
Once popular in most schools and parishes and often very formal, May Crownings are again becoming annual events to mark devotion to the Blessed Mary and the month traditionally dedicated to her. However, many are held at schools, so children who attend public schools can’t attend, and many parishes don’t observe this tradition. Whatever your parish or school, Sacred Heart invites you to honor Christ through Mary at the historic Italian church this week.
