Our Lady of Victory (Western Hills/Cincinnati) will hold its first-ever KCBS-sanctioned barbeque competition Saturday, when the church’s renovated interior will also debut. Look for volunteers wearing this t-shirt.

Our Lady of Victory will celebrate its renovation this Saturday with Mass, Adoration, and a new festival with a national reach.

The OLV Holy Smokes Barbeque Competition will bring 23 BBQ teams from around the country (list below) to the church camps to vie for a competition sanctioned by the Kansas City Barbeque Society (KCBS), which sanctions ad certifies barbeque competitions around the world.

At a KCBS-sanctioned competition, competitors — who can be restaurants, teams, or single cooks — prepare four meals (chicken, pork ribs, pork butt, and brisket) cooked over wood, wood pellets, or charcoal.

olv logoContestants will compete for $3000 in prizes. All can participate in barbeque tasting, and for $5 anyone can be a judge of the 2 o’clock “People’s Choice” competition.

Also present will be Operation BBQ Relief, a group of barbeque enthusiasts founded in 2011 to help feed  displaced families, Police, Fire, National Guard and emergency personnel when disaster strikes. Now numbering more than 1,500 members. Operation Barbeque Relief has provided more than 734,000 meals served by 3,500 volunteers in 19 states. Information about how to join will be available at their booth.

The festival will include live music, games, and craft beer from Braxton Brewing. But the competition is only half the draw. Months of renovations to OLV’s church building are finished, and you can see the results at the evening Vigil Mass.

Following 4:30  Mass, the parish will also celebrate with “Renovation Adoration” until 8 pm. A parish spokesperson say that Adoration “will help us to remember, while we love having a beautiful space in which to worship, ultimately the beauty of our church building is to show our love for Jesus Christ, especially in the Eucharist, the Source and Summit of our lives as Christians. “

Holy Smokes! Runs from noon – 11 pm. August 6th. For information on the event, the competitors, and more, see the event Facebook page.
