First Day: Mother of Mercy High School
Mother of Mercy High School in Westwood (OH) celebrates the first day of school with an all-school picnic lunch around the school grounds.
Founded as a girls’ secondary school by the Sisters of Mercy, the school was originally known as Mother of Mercy Villa. The Sisters of Mercy sponsor more high schools than any other religious community in the United States. In Cincinnati, they also sponsor McAuley School in College Hill (OH).
Mercy’s student’s come from more than 35 elementary schools and in 2002 it was named a National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence. This year Dave Mueller, principal of St. Xavier High School for the last 19 years, became the school’s principal. Though he’s spent many years at an all-boy’s school, he’s no stranger to Mercy — his wife, sisters, daughter, sisters-in-law, and mother-in-law are all alumnae.
Mercy will celebrate its centennial in 2015.
We will be highlighting the first day of school at area Catholic schools through the end of the week. Check out our growing Facebook gallery, and send your “First Day” photos to firstname.lastname@example.org.
