Races
May 18: Paige’s Princess Run. This family 5K in memory of Paige Helene Alessandro, a St. Maximilian Kolbe parishioner, will be held at Wyandot Elementary School in Liberty Township and followed by a Family Carnival. Course: Through Summerlin, Liberty Township. Cause: Cincinnati Children’s Hospital OT/PT department. Race time: 9 am (racers) 9:05 am (families). Shortcuts will be marked for families not up to the whole 5K course. Many runners wear princess skirts and fairy wings. Fee: $25 adult; $15 youth; $60 families with 3-6 participants (after May 14, add $5). Register online here. Last year’s inaugural race raised $31,000; several other events are planned throughout the year.
June 8: Annual St. Gertrude 5K Run/Walk, “Run to Remember.” The race will help grieving families by forming teams to run in tribute to families who have suffered a loss. Course: Through Madiera (Cincinnati). Cause: St. Gertrude. The race is part of the parish’s three-day festival, so many other activities follow. Race time: 8:30 am.
June 8: 21st Annual Run for the Poor. The St. Martin District Council of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul sponsors this annual race. Course: Around St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Parisn in Milford/Mt Repose (CIncinnati). Cause: SVdP Conferences in Adams, Brown, Clermont, Clinton, Highland, and Warren Counties. Race time: 9 am. Fee: Prerestration $15 (t-shirts available for $10); race day registration $20 (t-shirts $12). Register online here.
June 15: Third Annual Father Klein Memorial 5K Run/Walk, sponsored by Holy Name of Jesus parish in Trenton (OH). Cause: Edgewood Ministerial Association Food Pantry and Local Emergency Assistance Fund (LEAF). Course: Three laps of Trenton Community Park’s one-mile trail. Race time: 10 am. Race fee: $20; $15 students and seniors (includes t-shirt) $10 student (no t-shirt); registrations after May 31st will not receive shirt. June 15: Holy Angels Parish Picnic 5K Run/Walk sponsored by Holy Angels (Sidney, OH). To view and print the registration form, go to www.holyangelssidney.com and click on forms.
June 22, First Annual Ascension 5K Run/Walk. Course: Around Ascension parish, Kettering (OH). Cause: Ascension Church. Race time: 8:15 am. Race fee: $20 before June 1 (includes t-shirt; male or female fit); $25 June 1 and after (t-shirts as long as they last, male fit only). Race starts at Ascension playground; Ascension Festival follows race. Register online here.
July 4: Firecracker 5K Run/Walk in Wapokoneta. This will be the second year for the race sponsored by St. Joseph Parish and the Auglaize County District Public Library’s Friends of the Library. Course: A nearly flat couse beginning at the fairgrounds and through Wapakoneta. Cause: A variety of Wapakoneta programs, including God’s Storehouse, the St. Joseph chapter of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, youth events, outreach programs, and the library Summer Reading Program. Race time: 9 am. Fee: $18 (includes t-shirt); $22 race day. July 4: Pray-Hope-Believe Walk/Run. This inaugural 5K and Kids Fun Run at the Colerain Township Municipal complex is dedicated to the memory of Tony Merk and benefits pediatric brain tumor research. The course through a residential area is mostly flat and begins with a downhill start. $20 person/$65 max per family sharing the same address through 7/1/12; late registration $25 person/$75 family. Aug. 7: Viva la Vida, Lucas Pfander Memorial Alumni Race at Chaminade-Julienne High School (Dayton). Course: CJ campus. Cause: Lucas Pfander Scholarship, annual scholarship for a CJ rising senior. Race time: 6:30 pm (2-mile race for grades K-8), immediately followed by 5K race. Fee: None; all donations accepted. For information call (937) 461-3740 x 238. Can’t be there? August 10: 31st Annual Newtown 5K Run/Walk and Kids Fun Run. Representatives of the Cincinnati Zoo will be at this race run by St. John Fisher Parish. Course: Moundview Park, Newtown (Cincinnati). Cause: Newtown (OH) Civic Association; St John Fisher Parish; Inter-Parish Ministries Food Pantry; Newtown (CT) Family Services. Race time: 9 am (may change to 8:30; check with site for final time). Fee: $20 before August 2 (t-shirt included), $25 after (no t-shirt; available for an additional $10). Corporate sponsorship $175 (up to seven runners, t-shirts included). Aug. 16: The Hyde5. St. Mary parish sponsors this annual weeknight, evening run as part of its St. Mary Parish FunFest. Course: Through Hyde Park. Cause: St. Mary parish, outreach programs, and school. Race time: 6:30 pm. Fee: $20/$25, which includes after-party with food and drink. Live music, festival food, and festival events will follow the race. Register online here.
August 18: 7th Annual St. Chris 5K Run for the Youth. Bobblehead trophies to the top three in each age group; overall winners receive free race entry for life. Course: Flat course through Vandalia (Ohio). Cause: St. Christopher youth mission trips. Race time: 8:30 am. Fee: $15 (t-shirt) and $12 (no t-shirt) until August 4, $15 after. Sept. 1: Annual AlterFest Family 5K and Kids Fun Run . The Alter Track and Cross Country and Field Boosters Association runs this annual race as part of its Labor Day AlterFest activities. Course: Flat ground and around Alter High School. Cause: Alter Track and Cross Country programs. Race time: 8 am. Details to come. Web site here.
Sept. 3: 34th Annual Mercy Metric 10K Run and 5K Run/Walk. Course: Lunken Playfield (Cincinnat). Cause: Mercy Montessori after-school sports program. Call (513) 475-6700 for information.
Sept. 15, St.Timothy Oktoberfest 5K Run/Walk. Race Time: 6:15 pm, free kids fun run at 5:45. Fee: $15 by Sept. 12, race day $25. Register at: www.saint-timothy.org and www.runningtime.net. This evening race is part of the parish’s Oktoberfest festival; rides, music, and food available.
September 22: 3rd Annual Harvest Run for Hunger 5K Run & Fun Walk. Second Harvest Food Bank of Catholic Charities (serving Clark, Champaign & Logan Counties) sponsors this run/walk through the C.J. Brown Dam & Reservoir Visitors Center in Springfield (OH). Race Time: 8:45am. $20 pre-registration (deadline -9/12/12); $25 after. Register at premierraces.com.
Sept. 29, Rock Walk 5K for Breast Cancer research. Course: Heritage Park, Colerain Township (OH). Cause: the National Breast Cancer Foundation, which does not give money to Planned Parenthood. Race time: 10 am. Fee: $20/individual or $100/team. Bishop Joe Binzer will bless the attendees and Son Rise Morning Show producer Matt Swaim will emcee. Sept. 30, McAuley High School Jill Hungler Schlotman ’01 Memorial Walk for Cancer Awareness. Course: Around McAuley High School. Cause: to honor alumnae, parents, and special friends who have lost their battles with cancer; no race, walk at your own pace. Time: 9:30 am. Fee: None, but donations will be accepted toward the goal of raising $7,000 over the next two years to endow a scholarship at the school. Pets and strollers are welcome.
Sept 30: Sophie’s Angel Run. This annual race in memory of Sophie Grace Meinhardt starts and ends at the St. Jude Oktoberfest. Course: Through Bridgetown (Cincinnati) Cause: Pediatric Brain Tumor Research at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center. Start time: 1 pm. More information to come.
Oct.: Run for the Nuns. This annual race benefiting The Franciscan Monastery of St. Clare was suspended for declining attendance after the 2012 event. See the Sisters’ site for their other fundraising events and projects.
Oct. 5: 20th Annual Reggae Run. CHANGE OF SITE and time. Course: Eden Park. Cause: Nonprofit organizations helping children with special needs. Race is followed by party featuring reggae music. This annual race honors the memory of Maria Olberding and has raised more than $1 million since its inception. Further information to come.
Oct. 13: Running Scared 5K and Fun Run. Sts. Peter and Paul Academy holds this Halloween-themed race as it its major fundraiser; many participants wear costumes. Course: Flat course through Reading (Cincinnati), including Reading Cemetery, that ends at a Halloween Festival. Cause: Youth education. Awards are given at the finish line — no ceremony. Festival includes food, music. Registration info to come.
Oct. 14, Our Lady of Lourdes Divine Dash 5K Run/Walk. Course: Through Westwood. Cause: The Dottie Westerfeld Tuition Fund. Race time: 1:30 pm. Race fee: $25 adults, $15 students 18 and under; includes t-shirt (same-day registration, add $5). Jr. high and high school cross country teams may register by mail in teams of 10 or more for $10/runner. Free Kids Fun Run immediately follows. Register at www.runningtime.net. Nov. 2: Cincinnati Right to Life’s Pro-Life Saver 5K Run/Walk and Kid’s Dash. Course: Lunken Airport Playfield. Cause: Cincinnati Right to Life. Race time: 8:30 am. New fall date and site for this event for all ages. Walking race is for serious walkers only; if you plan to run or jog at all register for the Run. After-event festivities, including food, face painting. Emcees Matt Swaim and Anna Mitchell from the Sacred Heart Radio Son Rise Morning Show. Special trophies to Team with Most Participants, Team Top Fundraiser, and Individual Top Fundraiser; raffles and basket raffles; more. Full information and online registration at 5kRun4Life.org.

Most annual races are held around the same time each year. We’ll update the dates and information for 2014 — in the meantime, you can use these as a general planning guide.
March 23: 6th Annual Guardian Angels School Heavenly Hog Jog and Kids Fun Run. Course: Through Mt. Washington (Cincinnati) with music and fans cheering along the way. Cause: Guardian Angels School. A free after-race party will include food. Race time: 9 am (Kids Fun Run after the race concludes). Web site here.
April 13th: 8th Annual Cavalier 5K Run/Walk. Course: Around Purcell Marian neighborhood. Cause: Cavalier Athletic Department and events sponsored by the Parents Plus Program (P3). Race time: 9 am. Fee: $15 ($25 wirth t-shirt). Online registration here.
April 13: 5th Annual St. Louis School “Cardinal Crawl.” Bring a donation to the food pantry on race day. 5K Run-Walk-Crawl sponsored by St. Louis School (Batesville, IN). Cause: St. Louis School and local food pantry. Race starts: 9 am. Fee: $15/person, $40/household, including t-shirt. To register download registration form here.
April 14: Elder Family Fun Walk. This fundraising 5K, in its fourth year, has no associated race. Elder invites alumni, family, and friends to the event featuring children’s activities, live music, and food at “The Pit.” Course: Price Hill streets around the school. Cause: Elder High School general tuition fund and a designated charity. Fee: $10 (maximum $40 for families) for preregistrants.
April 20: 3rd Annual Blue Jay Jog n Jam 5K Run/Walk and Kids Fun Run. St. Joseph Consolidated School PTO sponsors this race. Course: Mostly flat course around lake in VORA Technology Park, Hamilton. Cause: St. Joseph Consolidated School. Race time: 9 am. Fee: $25 with t-shirt, $10 under age 12 with t-shirt (kids fun run free). Certified, time-chipped course; post-race picnic. April 20: Annual Incline to the Finish Line 5K Run/Walk and Kids Fun Run. Course: Challenging course around St. Joseph Home in Sharonville (OH) ends with an up-hill climb and a famous cheering sectiong. Cause: St. Joseph Home, the only agency in Hamilton County providing residential and respite programs to non-ambulatory, non-verbal and medically fragile infants, children and adults. Race time: 9 am. Fee: $25 (add $5 for wicking t-shirt) through 4/14, $30 after; $125 team of five; breakfast following race at Waffle House (no fee). Register online here.
April 21: 5th Annual Ursuline Academy Run for the Lions 5K. Course: A flat course around Ursuline Academy in Blue Ash (Cincinnati). Cause: Ursuline Academy. Pre-race mass at 7:30. Race time: 8:30 am. Fee: Preregistration fees range from $15 (students) to $25; $30 race day. Race will be followed by a breakfast, and awards ceremony, and live entertainment. Register online here. Web site here.
April 27: Chatfield College Solomon’s 5K Fun Run/Walk. Course: The St. Martin’s campus of Chatfield College. Cause: Chatfield College. Held in conjunction with Chatfield College’s annual Quilt and Craft Show, a popular draw from throughout the region. Course is flat; strollers and leashed pets permitted. Events at the show include an antique tractor, car, and motorcycle display. Fee: $15 adults; $8 students and children (registration includes T-shirt and admission to the Quilt and Craft Show). May 5,6: Flying Pig Marathon Weekend. 5K and 10K Saturday; Marathon and half Marathon Sunday. Many Catholic charities benefit from Cincinnati’s Flying Pig events — the newest is Run for the Call, raising money to help seminarians at Mt. St. Mary’s Seminary pay their room and board.
May 11: Christ the King Family Fun Run. Our Lord Christ the King parish sponsors this race. Course: A flat 5K run for adults and a 1-mile run for kids at Otto Armleder Park in Linwood. Cause: Cardinal Pacelli School Education Fund. Fee: $20 adult; $10 child; $50 family; $75 sponsor (t-shirt included with registrations made before April 27).
