Holtz: Get Back in the Game
The newest commercial from Catholics Come Home, set to air nationally beginning this week and ending with a spot at the Notre Dame/Alabama BCS Championship game Jan. 7, features legendary Notre Dame coach Lou Holtz giving a pep talk in a locker room.
In the 30-second ad Holtz exhorts viewers to keep their eyes on the goal, Heaven; to go to Confession when they “fumble” due to sin; and, if they’ve stopped going to Mass, to “get back in the game.”
Notre Dame, which began the season unranked, ended a spectacular undefeated seas with a victory over USC. But CCH President Tom Peterson says he came up with the idea for the ad long before football season began.
“The Holy Spirit inspired me to write this script more than a year ago,” he says. “By God’s grace I ran into Coach Holtz last July in the Los Angeles airport, inviting him to star in this evangomercial™. So you can understand why I’m confident that God is watching over us and has a wonderful plan in store!”
Whether God’s plan includes a Notre Dame bowl victory is anyone’s guess, but Notre Dame’s unlikely rise to face last year’s BCS champions will certainly mean a huge viewership for the game — and the commercial.
And that, says Peterson, means helping many more people get “back in the game” of life in the Church.
Since December, the Archdiocese of Cincinnati has been airing CCH commercials on a variety of radio and television stations. Paid for by private donations from all around the Archdiocese, the commercials lead people to the CCH web site (revamped this fall) and their local parish.
