Hurricane Sandy: How to Help
The Society of St. Vincent de Paul and Catholic Relief Services join the many other charities and organizations providing assistance to the victims of Hurricane Sandy. Both charities will help anyone in need regardless of religion, race, income, or any other factor. Here’s how and what to donate:
The Society of St. Vincent de Paul-Cincinnati is collecting funds for SVdP chapters in on the East Coast. Already at work with immediate aid, the chapters will also provide long-term aid to area families after other agencies leave. To make a donation, go to the SVdP-Cincinnati web site.
The Society is also working with Matthew 25 Ministries to collect food and other goods to be distributed to people who need them most. Drop off items at any SVDP thrift store (locations at the web site). Items needed:
Baby supplies (diapers, etc.)
Personal care products
First Aid supplies
“Our prayers are with those who have been impacted by the storm,” says SVdP-Cincinnati Executive Director Liz Carter. “We also pray for those who await word on the safety of their loved ones and for the volunteers and staff of the emergency, rescue and relief organizations who face the daunting challenge of helping their neighbors move on and put their lives back together.”
Catholic Charities of SW Ohio
Catholic Charities USA is coordinating donations from its member agencies to help families affected by the “Super Storm.” East Coast Catholic Charities agencies are serving as immediate responders, but will also continue to provide long-term aid.
“This is a time when we need to come together as a nation and Church, helping those of our brothers and sisters who arevulnerable and in need,” says Ted Bergh, Chief Executive Officer of Catholic Charities of SW Ohio. “It doesn’t matter where we live, we are all impacted by the damage and suffering caused by this storm.”
To donate, go the Catholic Charities of SW Ohio web site and click on the “donate now” button, or send checks to the agency at 100 East Eighth St., Cincinnati, Ohio 45202. All donations will go to Catholic Charities USA for use in hurricane relief.
