St. James School Makes a Difference

St. James School Makes a Difference

Economic and social problems can seem overwhelming, especially to children. What can anyone really do to help?

St. James School in White Oak (OH) demonstrates that one school can make a measurable difference. Like other Catholic schools, St. James makes it a point to help others throughout the school year through collections and service projects.

This fall, the small Catholic elementary school held five collections, four for Our Daily Bread-in-Over the Rhine, and one for Operation Gratitude.

Every week for the month of October, the school held a different collection for the Our Daily Bread, an Over-the-Rhine  ministry with Franciscan roots.

In the first week, the school collected $2,350 in change. In the second week, students collected 3,353 personal care items. The third week brought in 5,353 canned goods, and in the last week of October the school brought in 2,833 school supplies. The money and items support programs for the homeless, an after-school-program, and a soup kitchen.

After Halloween, students brought in 387 pounds of candy for Operation Gratitude, an organization that puts together care packages for the military, to send to troops overseas.

Multiply these efforts by more throughout the year, and it’s clear that St. James School students and families make a big difference in our community. Multiply them by collections and service projects at Catholic schools and parishes throughout the region, and it’s easy to see how serving Christ by serving others can transform the world.

St. James is a K-8 school in Cincinnati’s White Oak neighborhood. It is the only elementary school in the country to have been named a Blue Ribbon School of Excellence four times.
