Exorcists Hold Retreat at Seminary

Exorcists Hold Retreat at Seminary

A first-ever retreat for exorcists in the United States began this weekend at the  Athenaeum of Ohio/Mt. St. Mary’s Seminary of the West.

Led by Fr. Denis McManus, a priest of the Archdiocese of Mobile and theological advisor to New York’s Cardinal Dolan, the retreat is sponsored by the Te Deum Institute of Sacred Liturgy from the Diocese of Tulsa.

Until recently, there were not enough exorcists in the United States to hold a retreat, although exorcism is not rare in Europe or much of the rest of the world. In the past two years Fr. McManus has helped lead the effort to train exorcists for this country, but the retreatants gathered in Cincinnati for the rest of the week are not here for technical or procedural workshops.

Instead, the retreat is designed to “spiritually strengthen those engaged in this specialized ministry of the Church,” according to the Athenaeum. The priests request the prayers of area Catholics throughout the week.
